Sheli Petersen’s work at the MEIC December Exhibition

Barred Owls and Fox Sheli Petersen © 2010

Sheli’s Barred Owls and Fox, currently on display in the MEIC December Exhibition at the Freeport Community Library, is part of her series exploring the relationship of New England wildlife to the landscape. Barred owls are both nocturnal and diurnal hunters. They are often seen on the scout for small mammals in late afternoon and at dusk, particularly if they found nothing to eat the night before. In this scene, the mated pair briefly encounters another hunter, the Red Fox, just before daylight fails.

As in most of her illustration, Sheli combined life-drawing, observation, and references to imagine and create this scene, done with watercolor and prisma color on paper.
