winter show in Freeport

This illustration is from "Ice Harbor Mittens" by Robin Hansen, a story about two boys working on a lobster boat who get lost in the fog. Cupping wet mittens around a thermos of something hot seemed like a good contribution to this exhibit.

I'll be at the Freeport Library on Dec. 29 from 2 - 4, with Robin and other authors and illustrators celebrating winter books. Come in from the cold and warm up with some good stories.

Winter Show at Freeport Community Library

When I think of Winter I think of long dark nights filled with moon and stars, and crisp cold days filled with the simple gifts of good friends, joyous music, and reading by a roaring fire. The two original illustrations I have included in the MEIC group show are my seasonal card designs. One is my Winter Solstice design, celebrating the silvery light of the full moon on the longest night of the year. The second illustration was inspired by the lyrics of the Shaker song "Simple Gifts."

MEIC winter show at the Freeport Community Library

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is unfortunately full of stress and anxiety for many. I created a quiet piece that reminds us of the beauty of the winter season: the blinding white snow, the crisp shadows that the darkest season projects, and the amazing creatures that are well-equipped to live comfortable during the coldest of nights. I first drew this in Adobe Indesign using the pen tool (shown here), then I painted a water color based on the same design to hang in the show.

Winter Show at the Freeport Community Library

This time, for the “Winter Show” at the Freeport Community Library, I’ve entered two pieces, one cute and small with a squirrel reading a book before hibernating, and one cartoon-like called “Craving Summer” about grilling in the dead of winter. The squirrel one is circular, perfect to be reused as an ornament or a t-shirt, and geared towards the children’s book market. The other one is more like a New Yorker cover format (one can always dream), and it’s a memory of having just moved to Maine from Brooklyn and being amazed at our friends’ williness to grill us a delicious dinner in crazy cold weather!

Sheli Petersen’s work at the MEIC December Exhibition

Barred Owls and Fox Sheli Petersen © 2010

Sheli’s Barred Owls and Fox, currently on display in the MEIC December Exhibition at the Freeport Community Library, is part of her series exploring the relationship of New England wildlife to the landscape. Barred owls are both nocturnal and diurnal hunters. They are often seen on the scout for small mammals in late afternoon and at dusk, particularly if they found nothing to eat the night before. In this scene, the mated pair briefly encounters another hunter, the Red Fox, just before daylight fails.

As in most of her illustration, Sheli combined life-drawing, observation, and references to imagine and create this scene, done with watercolor and prisma color on paper.

Running Home - Winter Exhibition

I am exhibiting a digital print in this years MEIC at Freeport Community Library, Maine.

It was created using graphite and then coloured digitally in photoshop.

The piece was inspired by tales of some Inuit tribes who believe that the Northern Lights are angry Warrior Gods, and the girl, out too late after fishing is running home with her dog team.

Hope you will come along and visit the exhibition and see the full display of works.

Thanks
Hazel
